Email Program vs Browser

The difference between getting your email through an email program (see note to the right) and getting your email through a browser program (see note to the right) is where your emails end up.

Let’s say you have 500 emails.  Before you “get” your email, you emails are sitting on the computer that belongs to your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

If you get your emails by opening an Email Program, all 500 emails begin to move from the ISP computer to your computer.  This means they are downloaded from the ISP’s server to your personal computer/laptop.

If you use your browser, go to your ISP’s website and click on Webmail (for example) … you can see, read, and delete them.  However, they remain on the ISP’s computer.  You never actually move them (download) them to your computer.

This saves time, if you use dial-up.  You’re not moving them (downloading) them, therefore, it doesn’t take as long.

But this brings up interesting facts that I’d like to share  …

An email program is something like Outlook Express, Outlook, or Eudora Light.

A Browser is a program that you use to go to different websites on the Internet.

Most people use the Internet Explorer browser

(that’s the blue e icon on your desktop).

Some people also use Netscape or Opera.
